Great Britain has announced an increase of $2.8 billion in defense funding, aiming to expand the use of advanced technologies such as directed energy weapons and artificial intelligence within the Armed Forces.

This investment, part of the Spring Statement, will enable the installation of the DragonFire laser system on four Royal Navy ships by 2027, instead of just one as initially planned.

The DragonFire is capable of destroying drones at long distances with high precision, and its implementation aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional missile interceptors.

In addition, the British government plans to allocate 10% of the equipment budget to innovative technologies such as drones and AI, and to reform acquisition processes to facilitate faster delivery and expand small business access to defense contracts. A $517.7 million fund will also be created to accelerate the implementation of new technologies, along with a $2.5 billion program to ease defense exports from the United Kingdom.

Despite fiscal challenges, rising borrowing costs, and weak economic growth, the government continues to prioritize defense investment to strengthen national security and boost economic growth.

The United Kingdom aims to reach 2.5% of GDP in defense spending by 2027, with the aspiration to reach 3% in the future, emphasizing defense as a key pillar for innovation and job creation in the country.
